Today: Stranger Things

Sure, The Americans is off the air right now, but Stranger Things is here to fill the ’80s-hair void in your TV schedule. Winona Ryder stars in this sci-fi/mystery series that continues TV’s growing obsession with all things ’80s. She’s great, the series has a wonderfully eerie atmosphere, and the casting of the young’uns is perfecto.

Today: RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 8

As of today, the most recent season of RuPaul’s Drag Race is available to stream on Hulu. And not a moment too soon, since RuPaul was just nominated — finally! — for his first Emmy for best host of a reality program. Only took eight seasons and over 100 episodes!

Sunday: Vice Principals

I’m on the record here as being deeply disappointed in this new HBO series from Eastbound and Down creators Jody Hill and Danny McBride. The latter stars alongside Walton Goggins in this half-hour comedy about two suburban high-school administrators vying for the coveted spot of principal. I found it less than funny and more than a little off-putting, but if you’re jonesing for a Danny McBride fix, it’ll do the trick.

Sunday: The Last Panthers

If you missed this (literally and figuratively) dark Sundance series about a global network of thieves, thugs, and poor unfortunates caught in between, all six episodes will be available on Hulu this Sunday. The series is probably not the best to binge-watch; it’s pretty bleak. But it’s worth checking out for the performances alone; Samantha Morton and Croation actor Goran Bogdan steal the show.

Sunday: Power

Season 3 of the Starz original Power, from executive producer 50 Cent, premieres this weekend. The series — about the owner of a New York City nightclub who leads a second life as a drug kingpin — is a little under the radar considering the big-name talent behind it. If you’re missing the family drama, big-city power struggles, and killer soundtrack of Empire, tune in on Sunday.
